C25k: Week One, Day One

These are my initial impressions, a mere 30 minutes after I gave up on my first day of Couch to 5k:

  • This is hard.
  • There’s no way I can do a half marathon in six months.
  • There’s no way I can do a half marathon in six years.
  • I’m going to be sick.
  • I need to use my inhaler.
  • I’m so tired I couldn’t spell inhaler on my own. Thanks, Spellcheck!
  • Seriously? Am I going to have asthma problems?

I know, it’s really pessimistic. But that first attempt was BAD, ya’ll. BAD. I’m fairly certain that I’m going to have to repeat week one. But, on the bright side, I managed to do four of eight running sessions before I thought I was going to keel over. That’s good, right? AND, I calibrated the distance tracker on my heart rate monitor before I started the C25k workout. So I was already a little fatigued. AND I was running at 4.4 miles per hour at one point AND I sustained the pace for a minute. Should probably slow that down, actually.

Really, I know it’s okay. I just don’t feel like it’s okay. Mainly because I kind of feel like I’m gong to be sick still.

Oh, and I forgot to actually tell my heart rate monitor I was starting, so I don’t have the data for this workout. I did see that my poor little heart was going at about 160 beats per minute at one point. Whatever that means :D

    Dearest Bandedgirl,

Give yourself some credit, chica, you initiated the process. It does get easier. I started this last September and I’m still on week one. I gave up once I hit week 2 wall. (insert all sorts of stupid, lame excuses here) But really, not making it thru the first time out isn’t that bad. Try speed walking your way through it instead of jogging. Once you feel the speed walking has paid off – jog’er.

My asthma pretty much kicked my ass the first go out. I didn’t make it thru bc I thought I was going to die of a heart attack or perhaps just have an asthma attack in the middle of the ghetto and be shot or something. Lord saved me (not religious); now I just hit up the inhaler before heading out for the circuit.

As for the 1/2 marathon… more then 1/2 the world’s population probably doesn’t run that. :) Start with walking a 5k for a good cause. Not only is it mad rewarding helping the cause, but showing yourself that you CAN do it is motivation within itself. (I PROMISE)

YOU CAN DO IT (yep said just like they do on the water boy). Just stick with it, and curse your way thru it: OMFG I’m gonna die if I try another 60 seconds or WTF was I thinking. or JC why won’t this app shut up! :)

What about starting off with the 5k walking program and working up to the running program?

I think I just need to ease into the running a bit more. I can run for a bit, but need more recovery time right now. If I keep having trouble, I’ll go back to walking!
