Do you use Blogger by Google as your blogging platform? Have you cried yourself to sleep at night because you couldn’t follow my blog? Despair no longer, there is hope!
Okay, seriously. Amy left a comment on my EmoGirl post the other day pointing out that there are a TON of lap-band people on Blogger. She mentioned that it’s a pain to keep track of people using other blogging platforms and asked if I might want to make the switch.
I’m a WordPress girl at heart, but Amy did bring up a good point. If you’re on Blogger and want to easily keep up with another person on Blogger, it’s simply a matter of clicking on a follow button. But how do you keep track of blogs on WordPress, Tumblr, and other sites? It’s possible and easy–it doesn’t even take five minutes. Here’s how (click on thumbnails for larger images):
- Log into your Blogger account using your usual user name and password. You should be taken directly to your home screen, which displays (among other things) your Reading List.
- Select the Blogs I’m Following tab, then click on the Add button:
- Enter
http://bandedgirl.cominto the URL field. If you want to enter more than one web address at once, click Add Another below the URL box and keep adding addresses until you run out. Click the Next button when you’re done. - Select whether you want to follow my blog publicly or not (please please please be a public follower!), then press Follow.
And that’s it! Now you’ll see a feed of my blog on your Blogger Reading List, like this:
That’s all there is to it!
This method works with a lot of other websites, too. As long as the site provides a valid RSS or Atom feed, you can follow it using Blogger. Most sites with recurring updates like news sites or blogs will work. Here are some examples: CNN.com, Ask Metafilter, and Cute Overload.

any tips for a wordpress user? i like the wordpress platform a lot but have had some issues not being able to use java script and people not being able to follow me. any advice would be great.
I took a quick glance at your site (Leslie Cooks, right?) and the basics appear to be fine, but there are a lot of validation problems in the template you’re using.
If you provide more specifics about what’s going wrong maybe I could provide some assistance. Let me know!
no real problems. basically just cant use java script and google apps for blogging like friend feed and ad sense. the java script thing has been irritating. are the validation errors something i should worry about? my site works well just cant connect as well as i would like due to the restrictions. i dont feel like i know enough about what i am doing to self host. just thought the girl might have some tips on using wordpress. no biggie.
I just use Google Reader to handle all the blogs I read. It makes it easy and convenient. I can get to them from any computer I’m on or my iphone. Then I don’t have to care what platform someone chooses to publish. :)
There are other aggregators out there like google reader, I just happen to use it because it’s free and I use gmail for my mail so it’s also convenient.
I love love love Google Reader; it’s how I follow all of the WLS blogs I try to keep up with (in addition to a ton of other feeds)! But I thought this might help some of the Blogger people who want to read feeds created on other platforms :)
I’m a WordPress girl and use WordPress.com rather than try to host my own. I could, but I don’t feel like the extra work. There are lots of widgets that can be added to sidebars, including text ones that you can customize however you want. I don’t worry about people following me – there is an RSS feed that people add to their own feed reader, and I can tell from my stats that I get plenty of traffic from blogs linked to mine. I was part of a Blogger team blog and liked some of the features, but I’m happier with WordPress.
i guess my concern is that i could be making money with my blog but wordpress wont allow the apps that allow you to do that.
Oh this is wonderful and I am going to go do it right now! Thanks! OOOOh I am excited!
*LOL* Happy to help. Thanks for mentioning the Blogger/Wordpress conundrum so that I could write this :)
